The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has elected for the first time in the history a female president: Asma Jhangir. Widely respected for her liberal, progressive and democratic credentials, Ms.Jhangir,58, won a heated contest against her rival Ahmed Awais. She secured 834 votes against the runner-up’s 796. In a country where women exercise limited or almost no power at all, Asma has surely created history and set an impressive precedence before the ambitious girls in our society who long for empowerment and economic emancipation.
Asma has in fact always remained under national and international limelight because of multiple hats she simultaneously wore over many years. She has remained instrumental in fighting dictatorship in Pakistan and championed the cause of human rights, particularly the rights of women. (Read More)
