Balochistan-Punjab Police Coordination
With the sectarian killing of four members of Shia community at Quetta’s Masjid Road on Thursday by unidentified attackers, the Balochistan government has decided to seek assistance from the Punjab Police to grapple with the issue of religious targeted killings. In a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Nawab Mohammad Aslam Raisani, it was decided that Quetta would ask Lahore to assist in fighting unabated violence in the province. This assistance will seemingly be sought in the domain of fighting sectarianism.
Growing lawlessness is a major headache for Raisani’s government that has failed to restore peace in spite of reversing several policies of General Pervez Musharraf. During the previous government, the Levies Force was totally converted into police, a move which was described by the opposition parties, including the Pakistan People’s Party, as a major contributor to further instability in the province.
