VOA Interview: Amnesty International Report on Pakistani Media
I appeared on Friday on Voice of America‘s weekly show Access Point with Ayesha Tanzeem to speak about the recent Amnesty International Report about the dangerous state of the media in Pakistan. I mentioned how the intelligence agencies in Pakistan routinely contact journalists for ‘friendly advice’ and then end up threatening them to toe a line that is consistent with the military’s policies.
I also regretted that some political parties, such as the MQM, had also started to target journalists. A ruling party in the Sindh province, the MQM has been blamed for murdering Geo TV reporter Wali Khan Babar. This does not bode well for the Pakistani democracy. It is very encouraging that the democratic government headed by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, has decided to put General Musharraf on trial. But if political parties also engage in attacks on journalists and support parliamentary resolutions in support of the I.S.I., which has been blamed for the attack on senior journalist Hamid Mir, then we are taking one step forward but two steps backward.
